Code red: university closed

Due to the extreme weather conditions, the university is closed.

This is what the RUG stated via Twitter this morning. Students and employees are urged to stay home.

As of this morning, a KNMI code red is in effect for the northern part of the country. Black ice has caused all roads to become extremely slippery. Arriva buses are not running, and many trains have been cancelled as well. Hanze University is closed all day. The school will have buildings open to receive students and employees. The UB also announced they were closed this morning: ‘The UB, too, is closed until further notice today.’ As of 12, students were inside the library hitting the books.

Update: 9 A.M. – The RUG has decided to stay closed all day. ‘The weather forecast is still bad’, says RUG spokesperson Gernant Deekens. There will be no open buildings to receive students and employees. Deekens: ‘We advise everyone to stay home.’ The university twitter account posted the following message: ‘Update: the university will stay closed all day due to the continuing bad weather. Our advice to students and employees is to stay home.’

Classes and exams are cancelled. ‘Exams will be rescheduled’, says Deekens.

9:10 A.M. – Cultural centre USVA will also stay closed, just like Next. Sports centre ACLO is also closed. The IT department at the RUG has informed employees who stay home that they remotely log in through uwp.rug.nl. Nestor Support can only be reached through email, Facebook, or Twitter. The same goes for DUO.

10:28 A.M –  The Campus Fryslan in Leeuwarden is also closed for the day due to the extreme weather conditions, according to the RUG.
